Measurement Guide

How to Take Measurements

Accurate measurements give accurate results. Here's exactly where and how to measure for women and men.

1

Bust

Fullest point of your chest

Wrap the tape across the fullest part of your breasts, keeping it parallel to the floor and level across your back. Do not compress the tissue.

Wear a well-fitting (non-padded) bra for the most accurate reading.

2

Waist

Narrowest part of your torso

Find the natural indent about 2–3 cm above your navel. Breathe out gently, then measure — do not hold your breath or suck in.

If unsure, bend sideways — the crease that forms is your natural waist.

3

Hips

Widest point of hips & bottom

Stand with feet together. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping it parallel to the floor.

Usually 18–23 cm below your natural waist, but check by feel for the widest point.

Female measurement points

Use a soft tape

A flexible tailor's tape is best. A piece of string + ruler works too.

Stand naturally

Stand on a flat surface in your normal posture. Breathe normally — do not suck in.

Keep it level

The tape should be parallel to the floor all the way around your body.

Measure twice

Take each measurement twice and use the average for the most reliable result.

All calculations are percentage-based — accurate in both centimetres and inches.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Body shape describes the overall silhouette of your body, defined by the relative widths of your shoulders (or bust/chest), waist, and hips. The most common female shapes are hourglass, pear, apple, and rectangle. For men, the main shapes are inverted triangle, triangle, oval, and rectangle. These categories help identify styles and cuts of clothing that are most flattering for your proportions.

Your body shape is determined by comparing the measurements of your bust (or chest), waist, and hips. Use the body shape calculator at the top of this page — enter your three measurements and click "Calculate". You'll get an instant result along with a description and personalised styling tips for your shape type.

A body shape type calculator determines your body silhouette from three measurements — bust (or chest), waist, and hips. This free calculator identifies one of seven body shape types: hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle, triangle, and oval. Each type includes tailored styling advice for clothing, glasses, and hairstyles.

Yes — this is a free female body shape calculator for women. It uses your bust, waist, and hip measurements to classify your shape as hourglass, pear, apple, or rectangle, each with personalised styling tips. Select 'Male' before measuring to use it as a male body shape calculator instead.

The calculator uses percentage-based comparisons so the result is the same whether you use centimetres or inches. For example, an hourglass shape is identified when the bust and hips are within 5% of each other AND the waist is 75% or less of the average of bust and hips. Each shape has a specific set of rules, and in cases of overlap the algorithm uses a defined priority order.

Use a soft measuring tape. Bust: measure at the fullest point of your chest. Waist: measure at the narrowest point of your torso (about 2–3 cm above the navel). Hips: measure at the widest point of your hips and bottom. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and parallel to the floor. Take each measurement twice to confirm accuracy.

Photo-based results are rough estimates. The calculator uses on-device AI (MediaPipe) to detect body landmarks and estimate proportions from the silhouette, but lighting, clothing, camera angle, and body position all affect accuracy. For reliable results, we recommend using the manual measurement tab with a tape measure.

No. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser using WebAssembly-based AI models. No image data is ever uploaded to a server, transmitted over the internet, or stored in any way. The photo exists only in your browser's memory while you're using the tool.

Yes. Select "Male" before entering your measurements. The male calculator uses chest, waist, and hip measurements and classifies shapes as inverted triangle, triangle, oval, or rectangle — each with tailored styling guidance.

No. Body shape classifications are for informational and styling purposes only. They are not a health assessment, fitness recommendation, or medical diagnosis. If you have health concerns related to your body composition, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

A body type calculator — also called a body shape calculator — determines your body type from three measurements: bust (or chest), waist, and hips. "Body type" and "body shape" refer to the same measurement-based silhouette classification. This free tool identifies one of seven body types: hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle, triangle, or oval, with personalised styling advice for each.

Yes. Select 'Female' in the calculator to use it as a body type calculator for women. It takes your bust, waist, and hip measurements and classifies your shape as hourglass, pear, apple, or rectangle — the four standard female body types — each with tailored guidance for clothing, glasses, and hairstyles.

Yes. Select 'Male' to use this as a body type calculator for men. It uses your chest, waist, and hip measurements to classify your shape as inverted triangle, triangle, oval, or rectangle — the four main male body types — each with tailored styling tips.

To determine your body shape with a calculator, you need three measurements: bust or chest (at the fullest point), waist (at the narrowest point, usually 2–3 cm above the navel), and hips (at the widest point). Enter them into the calculator above, select Female or Male, and click "Calculate my shape". The tool applies a percentage-based algorithm and instantly returns your body shape type.

Body Shape Guide

What is a body shape?

Understanding your silhouette is the first step to effortless style.

A body shape describes the overall silhouette of a person's body, defined by the relative proportions of the shoulders (or bust), waist, and hips. Unlike BMI or weight, body shape is purely about proportion — it tells you about your silhouette, not your size or health.

Understanding your body shape is primarily a styling tool: it helps you identify cuts, fabrics, and silhouettes that tend to be most flattering for your proportions. For example, someone with an hourglass shape may find wrap dresses particularly flattering; someone with a rectangle shape can create curves with belted styles.

Three measurements define your shape — bust, waist, and hips. Their relative proportions determine your silhouette category.

Calculation Method

How the body type calculator works

This calculator uses a percentage-based algorithm, which means it produces the same result whether you enter measurements in centimetres or inches. The system compares your three measurements using a fixed set of rules:

Hourglass:

bust and hips are within 5% of each other, and the waist is 75% or less of the average of bust and hips.

Pear:

hips exceed bust by more than 5%.

Apple:

bust exceeds hips by more than 5%.

Rectangle:

all three measurements are within 5% of each other.

Rules are applied in order — the first matching category wins — ensuring every set of measurements maps to exactly one shape with no ambiguity.
